LeEco, formerly known as LeTV, has entered the Indian smartphone market with two products - Le Max and Le 1s. Le Max is the company's flagship offering priced at over Rs 30,000 while the launch of Le 1s is aimed at disrupting the Rs 10,000 smartphone space. We review Le Max and analyse whether it justifies the attached price tag.
The Le Max is a phablet with its 6.33 inch display. Holding a 5 inch plus display was a task a couple of years ago but we gradually got addicted to it. We only have a handful of smartphones measuring between 6inch to 7inch and Le Max is one of them. It is a bit too big for a single hand operation and required both the hands to operate. What's impressive about the Le Max is its design - an all metal body with its screen running to the edge (with only 1.6mm borders on the sides). According to the company, it is the monolithic glass screen completely suspended over the metal. The WQHD display with 2560x1440 pixel resolution has got 464ppi that makes everything appear on the screen sharp and bright. The volume buttons along with the mute button are placed on the left edge while the power key along with the SIM slot tray is on the right. The 3.5mm headphone jack is on the top. The speaker grills and the Type C charging port are at the bottom. The rear boasts a camera module with dual LED flash and a square shaped finger print sensor. Overall, the touch and feel of the device is pretty good.
The Le Max is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset with 2Ghz octa-core processor and is paired with 4GB of RAM. My review unit had 64GB of internal storage out of which only 58.25GB was user accessible. It handled 4k video with ease and even the sound output was pretty decent. I playing heavy graphic games and there wasn't even a single loss of frame. While everything worked smoothly on this device, including browsing and downloading apps, I tried playing a few heavy graphic games and the device did show any signs of sluggishness even once. The fingerprint scanner works. Thanks to the thin bezel, videos on this phone are simply superb. The Le Max has got Android Lollipop operating system wrapped in EUI. The user interface was neat and simple and I got used to it in a few days. The company has also tied up with ErosNow giving buyers one year free subscription to the premium service for watching movies.
LeEco has added a 21 MP rear camera to this smartphone that does an impressive job. It instantly locks the focus and the images captured are sharp and offer real looking colours. It does a decent job in average lit conditions too. While the low light imaging is better than most smartphones, a little bit noise is visible in the images. There is a 4 MP front facing camera for capturing selfies. The rear camera can also capture 4k videos.
The Le Max has got a 3400 mAh battery and a Type C charging port. While the phone is accompanied with a Type C cable, Le Eco has done a good job of adding a micro USB to Type C connector too, which can convert any microUSB charger into a Type C charger. The 3400mAh battery lasted a day with average use and auto brightness. Play 4k videos with full brightness and the battery will drain much quickly.
Bag it or Junk it: A fine piece of hardware. But the price tag of Rs 32,999 for a new brand is a bit on the higher side.
